Mapa Tour - Nirvana Studios

Welcome to Nirvana Studios,

A genuine community born from three persons that have converted the lack of financial resources into a tangible idea to the ones that have believed in the ideal.

These visionaries are all Nirvaneans from the yesterday and from today.

This map reveals the whole story, embracing the origins of space, artistic movement and path from the ones that have created it.

Nº 01 - CUSTOM CAFÉ

This space was the main storeroom of this old military quarter that in 2004 was purchased in ruins by the theater company Custom Circus without any governmental support.

By restoring this storeroom, the company meant to transform it into its own theater. However, due to constant financial struggling and numerous itinerary work, its phased construction has been extended for 8 years.

Somehow passionately believing and persevering has performed miracles! Custom Café, the mysterious theater, that several times was condemned to non-existence, was finally inaugurated in March 2012 with the show Le Cabaret Rock, an intensive production that has received more than 40 thousand viewers in 2 years in a row, signing the residence of this troupe from nomadic genesis.

Its involvement goes beyond the conventional theater space and the transition from the company’s underground imaginary to this room was the result of a real story, intimate and so scenic that the aesthetics which Custom Circus has represented during so many years on the road invade the visitor from Diesel Punk to Bizarre Chic and to Steam Punk.

The company has been careful in preserving and exposing at Nirvana Studios many of the artifacts found during the excavations of rebuilding and consolidation of the storerooms, in wish you could find bombs (deactivated) and innumerous archaeological industrial objects.

Nº 14 - ART GALLERY

S.T.R.A.N.G.E.

(Reactive Transdisciplinary Synergies, Nudes Arts & Experimental Gallery)

This storeroom was the first space of the indoor heavy artillery from Custom Circus at Nirvana Studios. Between 2004 and 2008, here, ruled the chaos of the shows Post-Apocalyptic & Diesel Punk that the troupe has produced.

Many of these shows occurred in the Boulevard and inside this storeroom simultaneously making the audience move in between theater vehicles that circulated in the scenes.

But this space was used for more than the performance itself and many troupes facilities and scenographies were built here, just as film mechanisms, artworks and concept events.

Starting from 2008 the Nirvanean migration of artists with complex structures increased and, in 2009, the space was converted as a Big Box project that received hundreds of pre tour rehearsals, videos, concerts and releases.

From this constant strange phenomenon emerged the name STRANGE. No one really knows what this space is! A rehearsal room? Yes! A multi-purpose Studio? Correct! A performance set? As well! A theater room? Thats it! A gallery? Bingo!

Nowadays the curatorship of the Nirvana Studios collection has also been enclosed, the platform of the permanent Exhibition called Nirvana Tour (check marker nº 00)

This is why, Artists and reactive Producers gather their synergies and also free them at STRANGE.

Nº 18 - STEAMPUNK ATELIERS

Custom Circus have dedicated this old storeroom to the Artisans of Nirvana Studios since is important to support these People now that the Digital Revolution controls Society with automatic upgrades that gently make the law.

In the old days manufacturers where proud of how their products lasted indefinitely. Today the opposite occurs, in the name of high tech and delicate fashion, nothing lasts but they turn you around with eco bla bla bla. In practice, brands get rich as never before, since now we pay more and more for things that last less time! Is that what we really want?

No one has the right to commercially run out the planets resources! As a matter of global respect, products should last as much as possible and not be programmed to obsolescence by the industry. A SteamPunk or an Activist

couldn’t accept that.

When vehicles where moved by animal traction, was hay only sold by monopolizing brands? There are ecological energetic solutions such as the hydrogen engine, magnetic engine, or vegetal methanol that have the power to democratize fuel.

Biodiesel and GPL calm environmentalists down since everything continues on their hands!

The electric engine presented as innovative on every decade, already has more than a century, as well as its dependency on fossil fuels!

If automobiles are consuming less, it is little due to computer science and much due to the replacement of 100%metal recyclable (nonetheless more expensive) by plastic. Everything is more ephemeral but it is sold with credits that last beyond the products!

It is worth supporting the Movements and Subcultures that take a chance in being different on behalf of these Facts.

Tesla/GE Engine–Westinghouse Brakes. Touristic version with 10 widows; Kuhlman Body (Ohio) & Carris (PT)

Nº 332 – Route Carris 15B & 15C (Algés – Dafundo – Cruz Quebrada)

17 Tons of History– 90 Years of Service (1906-1996)

In 1872 the Carris de Ferro Company is born with Tramways pulled by horses with tracks from Cais do Sodré to Dafundo. These poor animals and daring passengers were pioneers in the democratization of Portuguese beaches with the therapeutic summer habit of bathing.

1889 - in Paris, the last screws of the Eiffel Tower were being tightened and in Lisbon the CP Railway Company fixed a new era with the High Speed steam train from Pedrouços to Cascais, terrifying the fisherman, but dazzling the most futuristic contemporaries.

In 1900 Carris built A Geradora, coal-fired power station which would supply the future overhead network devils cablesand in 1901 the 1st tramway is opened, originating the noble lineage of Lisbons free riders.

While, in 1905, horse pulled Tramways were being withdrawn, our Nº332 Tram was fearlessly crossing the North Atlantic on a steam freighter from White Star Line, the company that would lose the Titanic in 1912

The epic inter-classist beach conquest of the Line (urban line that extends the length of the Lisbon coastline) had already been finished when, in 1940, the Coastline Road Marginal is inaugurated and the combustion engine starts to impose over the electric engine.

The next challenge would still be the wave conquest of the first Surfers of the 70s and 80s considered Freaks at the time

In 1959 with the completion of the Metropolitan, trams started to become rarer, but the heroic nº 332 worked 90 years witnessing the Monarchy and its fall, the Republic, the Estado Novo (New State), the 25th of April, the EEC and the EU, making its last trip in 1996.

In 2013, this industrial revolution veteran was already in an advanced run-down state and in order to preserve this museum heritage in an interactive way, the Oeiras Municipality approved the proposal from the Theatre Company Custom Circus to save this secular tram.

All this process was financed and done by the members of the troupe: specials transports, restoration and construction of this existentialist halt, so that more generations can make part of the long and spectacular history of the Nº 332.

In 1872, the epic conquest of the inter-classist beaches started, thanks to the birth of the Carris de Ferro Company with Tramways pulled by horses with tracks from Cais do Sodré to Dafundo. Nevertheless, the heroic nº 333 worked 90 years witnessing the Monarchy and its fall, the Republic, the Estado Novo (New State), the 25th of April, the EEC and the EU, making its last trip in 1996.

Nº 40 - CUSTOM VILLE

Utopia is like Art, its in the eyes of who sees it! Custom Ville is utopic some will say. And it is true since it was thought that way.

Why not build conceptual houses like it was the show season, where everything is nothing but sets and illusion? In reality, when we have arrived to this space it had already been a ghost quarter and maybe one day it will go back to that

The impossible is luring and noble just because its probability of success is tiny. In this crazy Troupe, which is the Custom Circus, we are made from this absurd matter, blind to good advice and defiant of the obvious, but faithful to ourselves.

We were inspired in the inside of our trucks and mobile trailers and that is why these bungalows, built with old military containers with an Upcycling & Road Culture architecture, are dedicated to the ones that live beyond the trivial daily comfort, people that dont grow on monotony and enrichen us with their experiences. This project was conceived thinking about them:

Artists, Show Technicians, Idealistic students, Activists, Craftsmen, Bohemian travelers, Bikers & Motards, Adventurers, Treasure Hunters, Researchers, Nature Lovers, Sportsmen, Freaks, Piece Warriors, Dragon Hunters, Philosophers, shipwrecked Sailors and so many others that will always be welcomed.

This is your casual haven! You know that Custom Ville is small and simple from the inside, nevertheless big in your imaginary; but above all, you know that you were part of this adventure called Nirvana Studios.

Nº 44 - ECO-TRACK / CYCLE PATH

More than a sport, practicing cycling is an act of positive citizenship and an example of healthy dynamism with favorable repercussions in all ecological settings.

Progress is equivalent to a better quality of life and, opposite to what people may think, both mean extra sidewalks and extra cycling tracks.

The hills arent as terrible as before, since the electrical bikes are here to stay, as the more evolved car drivers that face cyclists as equals, as truck drivers from the top of their tonnage that have always respected the little cars that ride under their nose.

Pedaling in fresh air fights against the everyday softening, being much better that shutting doors at the gym.

The bicycle purifies us, strengthens us, allows us to contemplate in a more Zen way, the space that surrounds us.

If we could all help a little in the development of our local network of eco-tracks, cycle paths and sidewalks, then imagine how this would reflect the quality of life in general.

If the space and terrain owners (companies, private owners, associations, institutions, etc) could give in some fraction to widen and make paths easier, imagine the global range that this project could reach.

What better example of social and ecological awareness can we possibly give to future generations?

Nirvana Studios are partners in this big adventure. Besides its inner eco-track, it also handed over the external path in all property extension to a future wider sidewalk in Estrada Militar (Military Road) and give its infrastructures, free of charge, to sports events and will continue to create more areas of support to cyclists and visitors.

Nº 78 - ECONTAINER

Did you know that kilter is a social invention? A reflex from the 19th century Industrial Revolution that printed a notion of disposable product in the consumer’s mind, that unfortunately, evolved more and more up to this day.

Way before the “disposable” concept, kilter didn’t exist and everything was reused, with no waste. There were no packages, but there were containers, there were no left overs, there was composting, fertilizer and food for animals.

It all began with the lid, the Gillette blade, the Cartridge cartridge, the can, the match and the cardboard, becoming more evident in the 20th century with the cigarette end, the plastics & synthetics and mainly with obsolescence programmed to “addict” the consumption society.

The international platform of collecting and residue treatment, boxes, vehicles and dumps that still exist today, was created by the Paris Municipality mayor Eugéne Poubelle (1831-1907).

It’s not too late to balance Society and Nature. But the future is in your mentality! Knowledge is power and Action is the key: Reusing is better than recycling and understanding that due to the futile eagerness of having new things, we are increasing the underworld of toxic plastic that is poisoning us!

There are many alternatives! Biological plastic is one of the most urgent ones! And if you are transversal to fashion created by the brands and know how to redirect your left overs, you can reduce immensely your ecological footprint. But, the most important is for you to internalize that you are also part of Nature.
